Amphistephanites was named by Zakharov (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Paratirolites parisensis.

It was assigned to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stephanitidae by Tozer (1981) and Zakharov and Popov (2014).
