It was reranked as the unranked clade Burnetiamorpha by Sidor and Welman (2003), Rubidge and Kitching (2003), Sidor et al. (2004), Rubidge et al. (2006), Smith et al. (2006) and Sidor and Smith (2007).
It was assigned to Theriodontia by Broom (1923); to Theromorpha by Kuhn (1946); and to Biarmosuchia by Sidor and Welman (2003), Rubidge and Kitching (2003), Sidor et al. (2004), Rubidge et al. (2006), Smith et al. (2006) and Sidor and Smith (2007).
