Taxonomy
Aspenites was named by Hyatt and Smith (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1066]. Its type is Aspenites acutus. It is the type genus of Aspenitidae, Aspenitinae.

It was assigned to Aspenitinae by Spath (1934); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aspenitidae by Tozer (1981), Brayard et al. (2013), Shigeta and Nguyen (2014) and Đaković et al. (2022).
