Taxonomy
Carnites was named by Mojsisovics (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-l Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Carnitidae.

It was assigned to Ptychitinae by von Mojsisovics (1882); to Carnitidae by Spath (1951) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
