Moerkeia was named by Böhm (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-l Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 119].

It was assigned to Strombidae by Böhm (1895); to Protorculidae by Nützel and Senowbari-Daryan (1999); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Purpurinidae by Cossmann (1909), Wenz (1938) and Guzhov (2004).
