Choristoceras was named by Hauer (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-u Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Choristoceras marshi. It is the type genus of Choristocerataceae.
It was assigned to Choristoceratidae by Spath (1951), Tozer (1979), Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
