Hyptiogastrites was named by Cockerell (1917). It is the type genus of Hyptiogastritinae, Hyptiogastritini.
It was assigned to Evaniidae by Cockerell (1917); to Aulacidae by Carpenter (1992) and Jennings et al. (2004); to Gasteruptioninae by Ross and York (2000) and Li et al. (2018); and to Hyptiogastritini by Engel (2017) and Turrisi and Ellenberger (2019).
