Orthocerataceae was named by M'Coy (1844).

It was reranked as the suborder Orthocerataceae by Evans (1996); it was reranked as the subclass Orthoceratoidea by Evans (2005) and Kröger and Evans (2011).

It was assigned to Orthocerida by Sweet (1964), Evans (1994) and Evans (1996); and to Cephalopoda by Evans (2005) and Kröger and Evans (2011).
