Pimpla was named by Fabricius (1804). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pimplinae, Pimplini.
It was assigned to Piezata by Fabricius (1804); to Ichneumonidae by Cockerell (1921) and Carpenter (1992); to Pimplinae by Statz (1936) and Spasojevic et al. (2018); and to Pimplini by Klopfstein and Spasojevic (2019) and Klopfstein et al. (2019).
