Caryophyllia cupuliformis was named by Alloiteau (1936).

It was recombined as Paratrochocyathus cupuliformis by Alloiteau (1958); it was recombined as Trochocyathus cupuliformis by Alloiteau (1951), Baron-Szabo (2008) and Kiessling (2014).
