Hyolithes cybele was named by Walcott (1905) [TYPE SPECIMEN: = lectotype.]. Its type specimen is USNM 57788-B/3, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Nevadotheca cybele by Malinky (1990).
