Helictites was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Ammonites geniculatus.

It was assigned to Buchitidae by Spath (1951); to Metasibiritidae by Tozer (1981); to Thetiditidae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
