Hypocladiscites was named by Mojsisovics (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Cladiscites subtornatus.

It was reranked as Cladiscites (Hypocladiscites) by Gemmellaro (1904).

It was assigned to Cladiscites by Gemmellaro (1904); to Cladiscitidae by Spath (1951), Okuneva et al. (1977) and Tozer (1981); to Cladiscitinae by Gamsjäger (1982); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
