Indonesites was named by Welter (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Indonesites dieneri.

It was assigned to Haloritidae by Spath (1951); to Tropitidae by Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
