Taxonomy
Japonites was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Ceratites planiplicatus. It is the type genus of Japonitidae.

It was assigned to Gymnitidae by Spath (1951); to Japonitidae by Tozer (1981); to Japonitinae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
