Platypterna deanii
Taxonomy
Ornithichnites deanii was named by Hitchcock (1837). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is The Cove, Wethersfield, which is in a Hettangian/Sinemurian fluvial-lacustrine shale in the Portland Formation of Connecticut. It is the type species of Platypterna.
It was recombined as Ornithoidichnites deanii by Hitchcock (1841); it was recombined as Platypterna deanianus by Hitchcock (1845); it was recombined as Platypterna deaniana by Hitchcock (1848), Warren (1854), Hitchcock (1871), Hitchcock (1889), Hitchcock (1898), Hay (1902), Lull (1904) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Platypterna deanii by Lull (1917), Hitchcock and Grier (1927) and Haubold (1971).
