Meginoceras was named by McLearn (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Steinmannites (Meginoceras) meginae.

It was assigned to Steinmannites by McLearn (1930); to Arpaditinae by Tozer (1981), Tozer (1994) and Gómez-Luna et al. (1998); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
