Metacarnites was named by Diener (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-l Tr Nori-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Metacarnites footei.
It was assigned to Tibetitidae by Spath (1951) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
