Metahedenstroemia was named by Spath (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Hedenstroemia kastriatae.

It was assigned to Hedenstroemiidae by Spath (1934) and Kummel (1969); to Noritidea by Tozer (1981); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Noritidae by Brayard et al. (2009).
