Hallucicrania was named by Lee (1995) [Whether this taxon is extinct or not depends on exclusion or inclusion of turtles, respectively.]. It was considered monophyletic by Lee (1995) and Lee (1997).

It was assigned to Procolophoniformes by Lee (1995); and to Procolophonia by Lee (1997).
