Owenites was named by Hyatt and Smith (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Owenites koeneni.
It was assigned to Proptychitidae by Spath (1934); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Melagathiceratidae by Shigeta and Nguyen (2014); and to Paranannitidae by Tozer (1981), Brayard et al. (2013) and Đaković et al. (2022).
