Paraganides was named by Hyatt and Smith (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Paraganides californicus.

It was assigned to Haloritidae by Spath (1951); and to Ceratitida by Tozer (1981) and Sepkoski (2002).
