Taxonomy
Prionastraea rhomboidea was named by Kühn (1933). Its type locality is Mohammabad, which is in a Burdigalian perireef or subreef limestone in the Saidabad Coral Limestone Formation of Iran.

It was recombined as Favites rhomboidea by Kiessling (2008).
