Taxonomy
Pliopithecoidea was named by Zapfe (1961) [also said to be 1960]. It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Harrison et al. (1991).

It was assigned to Catarrhini by Harrison et al. (1991), Harrison and Gu (1999), Moyà‐Solà et al. (2001), Begun (2002), Rossie and MacLatchy (2006), Alba et al. (2009) and Alba and Moyà-Solà (2012).
