Paratrachyceras was named by Arthaber (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Trachyceras hofmanni.

It was assigned to Trachyceratidae by Spath (1951); to Protrachyceratinae by Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
