Peripleurites was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Choristoceras (Peripleurites) roemeri.

It was assigned to Dinaritinae by Mojsisovics (1893); to Rhabdoceratidae by Tozer (1979), Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Choristoceratidae by Spath (1951) and Riccardi (2019).
