Phillipites was named by Diener (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Ceratites (Phillipites) by Smith (1914).

It was assigned to Ceratites by Smith (1914); to Beyrichitinae by Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
