Pinacoplacites was named by Diener (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Placites meridianus.

It was assigned to Pinacoceratidae by Spath (1951) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
