Taxonomy
Placites was named by Mojsisovics (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Pinacoceras platyphyllum. It is the type genus of Placitinae.

It was assigned to Pinacoceratidae by Spath (1951) and Astakhova (1971); to Gymnitidae by Tozer (1981); to Placitinae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
