Pinacoceras (Pompeckjites) was named by von Mojsisovics (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Ammonites layeri.

It was reranked as Pompeckjites by Spath (1951), Tozer (1981) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Pinacoceras by von Mojsisovics (1902); to Pinacoceratidae by Spath (1951) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
