Protoplatytes was named by Cockerell (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Pinacoceras neglectum.

It was assigned to Pinacoceratidae by Spath (1951); to Gymnitidae by Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
