Ammonites cephalotus was named by Courtiller (1860). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Neoptychites cephalotus by Kennedy and Wright (1979), Chancellor (1982), Cobban and Hook (1983), Amédro and Hancock (1985), Zaborski (1987), Kennedy and Cobban (1988), Meister (1989), Summesberger (1992), Meister et al. (1994), Chancellor et al. (1994), Aly et al. (2008), Kennedy et al. (2008), Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009), Ayoub-Hannaa and Fürsich (2012), Kennedy and Gale (2016) and Benzaggagh et al. (2017).

Synonyms

Ammonites telinga was named by Stolickza (1865). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Neoptychites telinga by Cobban and Hook (1983) and Kennedy et al. (1987); it was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Chancellor (1982), Zaborski (1987) and Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
Neoptychites transitorius was named by Renz (1982). Its type specimen is Re6952, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Assemblage 2, La Morita [Chejendé Mbr, La Luna Fm], which is in a Turonian marine siliciclastic in the La Luna Formation of Venezuela.

It was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Zaborski (1987) and Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
Neoptychites xetriformis was named by Pervinquiére (1907). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Kennedy and Cobban (1988) and Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
Neoptychites crassus was named by Solger (1904). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Balangi, Mungo River (Turonian float), which is in a Turonian carbonate limestone in the Mungo River Formation of Cameroon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
Ammonites xetra was named by Stoliczka (1865).

It was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Zaborski (1987) and Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).

Pulchellia perovalis was named by von Koenen (1897). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mungo River, between Mundame and Eliki, which is in a Turonian carbonate limestone/sandstone in the Mungo River Formation of Cameroon.

It was recombined as Neoptychites perovalis by Solger (1904), Riedel (1933) and Reyment (1955); it was synonymized subjectively with Neoptychites cephalotus by Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
Neoptychites telingaeformis was named by Solger (1904).
