Dinornis elephantopus was named by Owen (1856).

It was recombined as Euryapteryx elephantopus by Lambrecht (1933); it was recombined as Pachyornis elephantopus by Worthy (1997), Worthy (1998) and Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003).
