Ptycharcestes was named by Mojsisovics (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ptycharcestes rugosus.

It was reranked as Arcestes (Ptycharcestes) by von Mojsisovics (1896).

It was assigned to Arcestes by von Mojsisovics (1896); to Arcestidae by Spath (1951); to Juvavitinae by Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
