Taxonomy

Pelecanus varius was named by Gmelin (1789). It is extant.

It was recombined as Phalacrocorax varius by Worthy (1998), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017) and Worthy and Nguyen (2020).

Synonyms

Phalacrocorax vetustus was named by De Vis (1905). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lower Cooper River, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Australia. It is the type species of Australocorax.

It was recombined as Australocorax vetustus by Lambrecht (1933) and Brodkorb (1952); it was synonymized subjectively with Phalacrocorax varius by Boles (2010) and Worthy and Nguyen (2020).
