Psittacus meridionalis was named by Gmelin (1788). It is extant.

It was recombined as Nestor meridionalis by Worthy (1997), Worthy (1998), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
