Taxonomy
Columnastraea maxima was named by Gregory (1900). Its type locality is Auradu, Auradu Limestone, which is in a Paleocene reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Auradu Limestone Formation of Somalia.

It was recombined as Columastrea maxima by Kiessling (2008).
