Heliodiscus was named by Haeckel (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Heliodiscidae.

It was assigned to Heliodiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
