Taxonomy
Sphingites was named by Mojsisovics (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Tr Carn-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites coangustatus.

It was assigned to Arcestidae by von Mojsisovics (1882); to Sphingitidae by Spath (1951), Creutzburg et al. (1966) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
