Stephanites was named by Waagen (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prionitidae by Brayard et al. (2009) and Brühwiler and Bucher (2012); and to Stephanitidae by Spath (1934), Tozer (1981) and Zakharov and Moussavi Abnavi (2013).
