Kionoceratidae was named by Hyatt (1900). Its type is Kionoceras.

It was reranked as the subfamily Kionoceratinae by Sweet (1964); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Cephalopoda by Kröger and Isakar (2006).

It was assigned to Orthochoanites by Strand (1934); to Orthoceratidae by Sweet (1964); to Orthoceratida by Dzik and Kiselev (1995); and to Orthocerida by Kröger (2008).
