Tardeceras was named by Hyatt and Smith (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Tardeceras parvum.

It was assigned to Haloritidae by Spath (1951); to Tropiceltitidae by Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
