Taxonomy
Trachyceras was named by Laube (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-l Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Ammonites (Ceratites) aon. It is the type genus of Trachyceratinae.

It was reranked as Ammonites (Trachyceras) by Mojsisovics (1869); it was reranked as Anolcites (Trachyceras) by Mojsisovics (1893).

It was assigned to Ammonites by Mojsisovics (1869); to Anolcites by Mojsisovics (1893); to Trachyceratidae by Spath (1951) and Tozer (1981); to Trachyceratinae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
