Ammonites woollgari was named by Mantell (1822). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Prionotropis woollgari by Stanton (1893) and Böse (1928); it was recombined as Acanthoceras woollgari by Petrascheck (1902); it was recombined as Prionocyclus (Collignoniceras) woollgari by Jeletzky (1970); it was recombined as Collignoniceras woollgari by Cobban (1983), Amédro and Hancock (1985), Kennedy and Cobban (1988), Summesberger (1992), Kennedy et al. (2001), Sealey and Lucas (2011), Wilmsen and Nagm (2014) and Kennedy and Gale (2016).
