Tritropidoceras was named by Schenk (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Tritropidoceras packardi.

It was assigned to Tropiceltitidae by Spath (1951); to Tropitidae by Schenk (1935) and Tozer (1981); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).

E. T. Schenk 1935s.7-Form evolute, widely umbilicate, whorls slightly embracing. Width of volution almost equal to height. Surface with numer- ous nodose ribs which trend toward the aperture after crossing the ventral shoulder. Venter flattened with a high keel bounded by deep furrows on either side. Secondary keels present on the outer margins of the furrows. Septa weakly ammonitic with divided ventral lobe and with two laterals.
