Avemetatarsalia was named by Benton (1999). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Avemetatarsalia by Nesbitt et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Archosauria by Benton (1999), Nesbitt (2011) and Nesbitt et al. (2017).
