Tropigymnites was named by Spath (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Sibyllites planorbis.

It was assigned to Celtitidae by Spath (1951); to Japonitidae by Tozer (1981); to Japonitinae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
