Discophyllites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr Nori-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Lytoceras patens. It is the type genus of Discophyllitidae.
It was reranked as Rhacophyllites (Discophyllites) by von Mojsisovics (1902) and Smith (1927).
