Taxonomy
Discophyllites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr Nori-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Lytoceras patens. It is the type genus of Discophyllitidae.

It was reranked as Rhacophyllites (Discophyllites) by von Mojsisovics (1902) and Smith (1927).

It was assigned to Rhacophyllites by von Mojsisovics (1902) and Smith (1927); to Discophyllitidae by Wiedmann (1970), Tozer (1981) and Tozer (1994); and to Phylloceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
