Phylloceras (Hypophylloceras) was named by Salfeld (1924) [Sepkoski age: K (Vala) - K (Maes-u)]. Its type is Phylloceras onoensis.

It was reranked as Hypophylloceras by Packard (1960), Young (1979), Morozumi (1985), Avram and Gradinaru (1993), Wright et al. (1996), Courville and Odin (2001), Főzy (2001), Sepkoski (2002), Murphy and Rodda (2006) and Ifrim et al. (2013).
