Palaeophyllites was named by Welter (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,302]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeophyllites steinmanni. It is the type genus of Palaeophyllitidae.
It was reranked as Monophyllites (Palaeophyllites) by Renz and Renz (1948).
It was assigned to Monophyllitidae by Spath (1934); to Monophyllites by Renz and Renz (1948); to Ussuritidae by Kummel (1969) and Tozer (1981); to Phylloceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeophyllitidae by Zakharov and Smyshlyaeva (2016) and Smyshlyaeva and Zakharov (2021).
